Nickel’s Hot Shooting Propels Titans Past Falcons
Cory Nickel (Jr. • Waupun) posted eight triples and a career-best 27 points in UW-Oshkosh's 69-52 win at UW-River Falls on Saturday (Dec. 8).
Besides his 8-of-14 accuracy behind the arc, Nickel compiled four rebounds and three steals. The Titans (3-4/1-1 WIAC) were tied with 11 minutes left before going on a 13-2 run to take the contest.
UW-River Falls (3-5/0-2 WIAC), last year's WIAC Tournament champion, controlled the first half. The Falcons never trailed and jumped to a 7-0 lead on Zach Peterson's three-point play. A lay-up from Ollie White made it a 13-5 advantage with 13 minutes left in the opening half.
Nickel drained a pair of long jumpers to start the Titan comeback. He then connected from downtown again and Alex Olson (Fr. • Brookfield) made a bucket to tie the score at 20. Martell Hutchinson (Sr. • Milwaukee) drove for a lay-up to make it a 26-26 game at intermission.
Eight seconds into the final period, Nickel hit a three-ball for the lead. UW-River Falls responded with a 10-1 run, as White dialed up a three-pointer to go on top, 36-30.
Nickel then knocked down two more triples 65 seconds apart. After a Jade Royston (Jr. • Wisconsin Dells) jumper with 7:16 on the clock, the Titans held a 52-41 advantage. The lead was double digits for the final six minutes.
Royston made seven free throws in the last 4:10 to finish with 21 points. Olson booked four assists and five steals for the Titans, who shot 42 percent (21-50) overall, 44 percent (10-23) from deep and 74 percent at the foul line (17-23).
Zach Peterson paced UW-River Falls with 15 points and 10 rebounds. White and Arik Smith tallied 10 points each, to go with six assists from Taylor Peterson.
The Falcons won the rebounding battle, 36-27, but couldn't overcome their 22 turnovers. UW-River Falls totaled 44 percent (21-48) accuracy from the field, 23 percent (5-22) behind the arc and 63 percent at the charity stripe (5-8).
UW-Oshkosh visits UW-Platteville for a night game next Saturday (Dec. 15).
