Tony Starnes (Sr. • Green Bay) scored a pair of goals as the UW-Oshkosh men's soccer team opened its 29th season with a 3-3, double-overtime tie with Wartburg College (Iowa) on Friday (Aug. 31) in Waverly, Iowa.
Starnes gave UW-Oshkosh (0-0-1) leads of 1-0 and 2-1 with unassisted goals in the 22nd (21:20) and 60th (59:27) minute of action, respectively.
Wartburg College (0-0-1) created a 1-1 tie when Dan Nadeau scored off a corner kick by Kris Krohn in the 39th (38:22) minute of play. The Knights then tied the score again as Luke Salzwedel sailed a shot off a pass from Brady Anderson into the goal at the 60:22 mark of the match.
Brandon Cook gave Wartburg College a 3-2 lead when he scored off a pass from Zach Smith in the 67th minute. The Knights held their advantage until the Titans' Evan Krause (Fr. • New Berlin) converted a penalty kick with 2:44 left in regulation.
Despite a 5-1 advantage in shots by Wartburg College, both 10-minute overtime sessions went scoreless.
UW-Oshkosh concluded the match with 27 shots, including 15 in the second period when it also earned nine corner kicks. Starnes led the Titans with seven shots, while Ryan Redmond (Jr. • Lake Elmo, Minn.) tallied five and Ryan Hanna (Jr. • Verona) and Chris Kurth (Jr. • Green Bay) three each.
Wartburg College totaled 17 shots, with eight of them coming in the second half. The Knights were led by the three shots of Salzwedel.
Nick Barry (So. • Wheaton, Ill.) guarded the UW-Oshkosh goal for all 110 minutes. He saved nine shots, including five in the second half. Wartburg College recorded 10 saves, including six by Zak Kohlmeyer who played the final 65 minutes of the match.
UW-Oshkosh remains in Iowa to play Central College on Saturday (Sept. 1) in Pella.
