UW-Oshkosh broke a scoreless battle with two goals in the final eight minutes as it opened WIAC play with a 2-0 victory over the UW-Superior men's soccer team on Saturday (Sept. 29) in Duluth, Minn.
Jonathan Stanley (Fr. • Lindenhurst, Ill.) gave the Titans (5-3-1/1-0 WIAC) a 1-0 lead when beat the UW-Superior goalkeeper to the ball and headed home a shot in the contest's 82nd minute (81:00). It was Stanley's second goal of the season, including his second match winner.
UW-Oshkosh doubled its lead on a goal by Hans Becker (So. • Madison) with 47 seconds left (89:13) in the contest. Becker's third goal of the season came off a pass from Sean Boulanger (Fr. • New Franken).
UW-Superior (7-4/1-1 WIAC) attempted 10 of its 12 shots in the first half while UW-Oshkosh launched 10 of its 15 shots in the second. The Yellowjackets were led by the five shots of Nate Engel and the two of both Ben Kasper and Ben Royce. Ryan Hanna (Jr. • Verona) paced the Titans with five shots, while Chris Kurth (Jr. • Green Bay), Paul Marx (Sr. • New Berlin) and Ryan Redmond (Jr. • Lake Elmo) contributed two each.
UW-Oshkosh's Nick Barry (So. • Wheaton, Ill.) saved six shots, all in the first half, for his fourth shutout of the season. Matt Elder had four goalkeeping saves for UW-Superior, including three in the second half.
The win improved UW-Oshkosh's record in its last six matches to 4-0-2. The loss was just the second for UW-Superior in its last eight contests (6-2 record).
UW-Oshkosh, which has now won all 14 of its games with UW-Superior, visits nationally ranked Wheaton College (Ill.) on Friday (Oct. 5).
