Scoring both goals in the first half, UW-Oshkosh clinched its 28th consecutive winning season with a 2-0 victory over the Finlandia University (Mich.) men's soccer team on Tuesday (Oct. 23) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.
UW-Oshkosh's string of successful seasons is the eighth longest in NCAA Division III history. Ohio Wesleyan University owns an active streak of 39 consecutive winning seasons for the NCAA Division III record, while Messiah College (Pa.) follows with a current streak of 38.
Against Finlandia University (4-9, 0-3 WIAC), Sean Boulanger (Fr. • New Franken) gave UW-Oshkosh a 1-0 lead when he scored off a seven-yard header in the 11th minute (10:40) of play. Boulanger's first collegiate goal came off a pass from Paul Marx (Sr. • New Berlin).
The Titans (8-4-3, 2-1 WIAC) doubled their advantage when Hans Becker (So. • Madison) followed the rebound of his own missed shot with a two-yard scoring strike in the contest's 20th minute (19:28). The goal was Becker's team-leading sixth of the season.
UW-Oshkosh overwhelmed Finlandia University with 38 shots and 14 corner kick opportunities. A total of 13 Titans attempted shots, including Chris Kurth (Jr. • Green Bay) who launched seven and Becker and Boulanger who fired five each.
Finlandia University was unable to get off a shot against UW-Oshkosh. The Lions have been shut out in all five of their meetings with the Titans.
UW-Oshkosh had three goalkeepers see action, including Joey Wedderspoon (Jr. • Verona) who played 43:57. The Titans also used Marcelo Chiariello (Fr. • Sao Paulo, Brazil) for 26:35 and Nick Barry (So. • Wheaton, Ill.) for 19:28.
Finlandia University goalkeeper Brett Deiter played the entire match and saved nine shots. The Lions also had a defender record a save.
UW-Oshkosh travels to Waukesha on Sunday (Oct. 28) for a contest against Carroll University.
