UW-Whitewater answered a tying UW-Oshkosh score with two goals in the following seven minutes as it defeated the Titans, 3-1, in a men's soccer match held Friday (Nov. 2) in Whitewater. The contest ended the 2012 season for both squads.
Goalkeepers Nick Barry (So. • Wheaton, Ill.) of UW-Oshkosh and Matt Mikesell of UW-Whitewater combined for three saves before Max Hey scored in the 17th minute (16:02) of play to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead.
UW-Whitewater held its one-goal advantage until UW-Oshkosh's Ryan Hanna (Jr. • Verona) scored in the contest's 68th minute (67:42). The goal was Hanna's sixth of the season.
Less than two minutes later (69:20), UW-Whitewater's Alex Szarzynski scored for what proved to be the match winner. The Warhawks then sealed the victory with Sam Novak's goal in the 75th minute (74:38).
UW-Whitewater (8-5-3, 2-1-1) attempted 14 shots, including three from Novak and two from both Hey and Bob Shone. UW-Oshkosh (9-5-3, 2-2 WIAC) launched 12 shots with five belonging to Jonathan Stanley (Fr. • Lindenhurst, Ill.) and three to Hanna.
Mikesell finished the contest with six saves, including four in the second half. Barry ended the match with two stops.
The loss to UW-Whitewater denied UW-Oshkosh an opportunity to share the 2012 WIAC championship with UW-Platteville. The Pioneers won three of their four WIAC matches to capture their first league title.
UW-Oshkosh finished its 29th season of competition, including the last 28 with a winning record.
