Knights Spoil Titans' Season Opener

Victories in five of the six singles contests propelled Carleton College (Minn.) to a 6-3 win over the UW-Oshkosh men's tennis team on Saturday (Feb. 2) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.

UW-Oshkosh kicked off its 2013 season by winning two of the three doubles matches. Bobby Brooks (Jr. • Neenah) and Kevin Lewis (Jr. • Howard) defeated Paul Cooper and Andrew Hwang, 8-4, in the first flight, while Mike Gillespie (So. • De Pere) and Aidan Sauberlich (So. • Green Bay) conquered Christian Nagy and Avery Rux, 8-5, in the second.

Carleton College (1-0) picked up the win at No. 3 doubles as McCoy Becker and Ben Huang beat Anthony Greco (Jr. • Kenosha) and Adam Kasper (Sr. • Franklin), 8-3.

UW-Oshkosh's lone individual victory came in the second flight, where Lewis defeated Hwang, 7-6, 6-1.

Carleton College won contests at No. 1 and No. 6 singles on a tiebreaker. Austin Jiang posted a 6-4, 6-7 (10-8) win over Brooks in the first flight, while Nelson Wolf marked a 7-6, 1-6 (11-8) victory over Alex Yang (Fr. • Milwaukee) in the sixth.

The Knights, who have won 59 of their last 73 dual meets, also received individual wins from Alex Chin in the third flight, Cooper in the fourth and Mauricio Gonzalez in the fifth.

Chin scored a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Sauberlich, while Cooper tallied a 6-2, 6-3 win over Gillespie. Gonzalez recorded a 7-5, 6-4 triumph over Kasper. 

UW-Oshkosh plays matches against Edgewood College and Lawrence University next Saturday (Feb. 9) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.
