Titans Suffer Narrow Loss To Thunder

Victories in two of the three doubles contests provided the margin of difference as Wheaton College (Ill.) edged UW-Oshkosh, 5-4, in a men's tennis match held Saturday (Feb. 16) in Middleton.

The Thunder (1-1) jumped ahead of UW-Oshkosh (2-4) on 8-6 wins in the first and third flights of doubles play. Ryan Kreis and Josh Ward defeated Bobby Brooks (Jr. • Neenah) and Kevin Lewis (Jr. • Howard) in the first flight, while Derek Mumaw and Andrew Trump ousted Adam Kasper (Sr. • Franklin) and Alex Yang (Fr. • Milwaukee) in the third.

UW-Oshkosh won at No. 2 double as Mike Gillespie (So. • De Pere) and Aidan Sauberlich (So. • Green Bay) beat David Buursma and Miles Greenwald, 8-6.

Both teams captured three wins in singles play. Wheaton College took the highest flight as Kreis defeated Brooks, 6-3, 6-3. The Thunder also received victories from Buursma in the third flight and John Bodett in the sixth. Buursma trimmed Sauberlich, 3-6, 6-2 (10-8), while Bodett ousted Yang, 6-4, 6-1.

Lewis, Gillespie and Kasper were all individual winners for the Titans. Lewis tallied a 6-2, 6-4 win over Ward in the second flight, while Gillespie marked a 7-5, 7-5 triumph over Greenwald in the fourth. Kasper had a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Mumaw in the fifth flight.

UW-Oshkosh plays host to Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday (Feb. 22) at the Oshkosh YMCA Tennis Center.
