UW-Oshkosh closed its 2013 men's tennis season by suffering losses of 6-3 to UW-Eau Claire and 8-1 to UW-La Crosse on Saturday (April 20) in Whitewater.
In the opener, UW-Eau Claire (16-6) won five of six singles contests. UW-Oshkosh's lone victory came in the first flight, where Kevin Lewis (Jr. • Howard) defeated Ryan Vande Linde, 6-1, 7-6 (10-7).
The Titans' Aidan Sauberlich (So. • Green Bay) worked overtime, but came up short in his 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 loss to Florent Marco at No. 3 singles.
UW-Eau Claire won the remaining singles contests in straight sets, including 6-3, 6-0 victories for Joe Meier and Brayden Parman in the second and fifth flights, respectively. Meier defeated Bobby Brooks (Jr. • Neenah) while Parman ousted Adam Kasper (Sr. • Franklin).
Other individual winners for the Blugolds were Michael Roden in the fourth flight and David Stingley in the sixth. Roden beat Mike Gillespie (So. • De Pere), while Stingley topped Alex Yang (Fr. • Milwaukee), 6-3, 6-2.
UW-Oshkosh (9-13) took an early 2-1 lead in the match as Brooks and Lewis won in the first flight and Gillespie and Sauberlich in the second flight of doubles play. Brooks and Lewis edged Meier and Vande Linde, 9-8, while Gillespie and Sauberlich defeated Roden and Stingley, 8-4.
At No. 3 doubles, Marco and Kyle Hoffmann posted an 8-3 win over Kasper and Ross Kohlhase (Jr. • Green Bay).
Against UW-La Crosse (18-7) in the nightcap, Gillespie accounted for UW-Oshkosh's lone team point. He earned the score by marking a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Anthony Mirasola at No. 4 singles.
Yang forced an extra set at No. 6 singles, but lost 6-3, 6-7, 13-11 to Travis Murphy.
UW-La Crosse won the other four singles contests in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-1 victory for Nick Skanavis over Kasper in the fifth flight and a 6-2, 6-1 triumph for Vic Marasola over Brooks in the second.
Other individual winners for the Eagles were Kevin McMillen in the first flight and Kyle McGrane in the third. McMillen defeated Lewis, 6-2, 6-2, while McGrane ousted Sauberlich, 7-6, 6-2.
UW-La Crosse swept all three doubles contests. The tightest match came in the first flight, where McGrane and McMillen edged Brooks and Lewis, 9-8.
The Eagles also had Anthony Mirasola and Dante Pitera earn an 8-5 win over Gillespie and Sauberlich at No. 2 doubles and Matt Bulger and Vic Marasola an 8-4 triumph over Kasper and Kohlhase at No. 3 doubles.
