Titans Comfortably Win UW-Oshkosh Open

Cassandra Hemmen (So. • Appleton) posted two victories as the Titans captured the UW-Oshkosh Women's Track & Field Open on Friday (Jan. 25) in Kolf Sports Center.

The Titans tallied 265.5 points – more than the next four teams combined. St. Norbert College placed second with 142, while Ripon College earned third at 63.5, Lawrence University fourth at 27 and the University of St. Francis (Ill.) fifth at 26.

In the 200-meter dash, Hemmen clocked a 26.74 to win by 0.05 seconds. Teammates Samantha Blue (So. • Kimberly) and Stephanie Jahn (Jr. • Deerfield) were close behind in 26.79 and 26.85, respectively.

Hemmen also finished the 60-meter dash in 7.99 for first place. UW-Oshkosh added a high jump triumph with Kasey Ederer's (Fr. • Kaukauna) mark of 5-3.75.

Christy Cazzola (Sr. • Kaukauna) ran the best time in Division III this year with her 4:44.73 mile run. Titans also grabbed second and third place, with McKenzie Kelly (Sr. • New Richmond) booking a 5:13.10 and Sonny Jenkins (So. • Manton, Mich.) a 5:25.62.

Kylee Verhasselt (So. • Freedom) led a UW-Oshkosh sweep of the top three spots in the 800-meter race. Verhasselt won in 2:16.75, while Taylor Bauer (Fr. • Fort Atkinson) grabbed second in 2:19.23 and Kristen Stockheimer (Sr. • West Salem) third in 2:19.39.

In the weight throw, Samantha Loew (Sr. • Burnett) won with a nation-leading toss of 59-11.25. Melanie Brickner (So. • Marathon) scored a second-place distance of 57-3.5 and Breanna Strupp (Sr. • Slinger) added a third-place figure of 54-1.

Strupp kept improving her shot put with a 50-7.25, the best in Division III this season. Abby Martin (Jr. • Chilton) took the second position at 45-2.25, as Brickner earned third with a 43-9.75.

Megan Geldernick (So. • Wauconda, Ill.) attained the final triumph with her 60-meter hurdles time of 9.32.

Other second-place finishes came from Tessa Thurs (Fr. • Edgar) in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.38 and Rachel Westover (So. • South Milwaukee) in the 400-meter run at 1:00.95.

UW-Oshkosh heads to the Warhawk Classic on Friday (Feb. 2) in Whitewater.
