Relays Propel Titans To Warhawk Classic Title

UW-Oshkosh broke a school record in the distance medley relay while winning the Warhawk Women's Track & Field Classic on Saturday (Feb. 2) in Whitewater.

The Titans, ranked first in the NCAA Division III, captured the eight-team meet with 169 points. UW-Whitewater listed second at 117, followed by University of Chicago (Ill.) in third at 82, North Central College (Ill.) fourth at 76 and Augustana College (Ill.) fifth at 72.

McKenzie Kelly (Sr. • New Richmond), Stephanie Jahn (Jr. • Deerfield), Kylee Verhasselt (So. • Freedom) and Christy Cazzola (Sr. • Kaukauna) won the distance medley relay in 11:43.46, setting a program record. The time ranks first in the nation this year by more than 17 seconds. UW-Whitewater placed second in the event, but was 71 seconds behind (12:54.68).

UW-Oshkosh also won the 1,600-meter relay with Cazzola, Jahn, Verhasselt and Tessa Thurs (Fr. • Edgar). The quartet posted a time of 3:56.25, which ranks fourth in the NCAA Division III.

Individual triumphs came from Megan Geldernick (So. • Wauconda, Ill.) and Amanda Shober (So. • Sussex). Geldernick booked a 9.31 in the 60-meter hurdles and Shober flew 36-11 during the triple jump.

Claire Pohlman (Jr. • Sun Prairie) followed in the triple jump with her second-place distance of 35-5.25. The long jump standings featured Samantha Blue's (So. • Kimberly) runner-up score of 17-5.25.

During the 3,000-meter run, Sonny Jenkins (So. • Manton, Mich.) crossed the line after 10:55.18 for second and Leah Rendflesh (Fr. • South Milwaukee) was right behind in 10:57.62 for third.

Remaining third-place results came from Allie DeBaker (Jr. • Green Bay) in the 5,000-meter race at 18:32.90, Ashley Holicek (Fr. • Sussex) in the 60-meter dash at 7.96, Samantha Loew (Sr. • Burnett) in the weight throw at 57-8.25, Taylor Sherry (Fr. • Viola) in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.54 and Breanna Strupp (Sr. • Slinger) in the shot put at 47-9.

The Titans send athletes to Stevens Point and Ames (Iowa) next weekend (Feb. 7-9).
