Zupanc Finishes Boston Marathon In 3:05

John Zupanc, head men's cross country and assistant men's track and field coach at UW-Oshkosh, finished 476th in the 108th Boston Marathon held Monday (April 19) in Boston, Mass.

Zupanc, one of nearly 13,000 runners in the race, completed the course of 26 miles, 385 yards in 3:05.49. Appearing in his 16th Boston Marathon, Zupanc was the ninth-place finisher in his 50-59 age group.

Timothy Cherigat won the race with a time of 2:10.37.

Last year, Zupanc finished 538th overall out of 17,046 runners and ninth in his 50-59 age group.

Titans Finish Ninth At NCAA Championship

Nick Boehlke (Jr. • Eagle River) listed 46th individually as the UW-Oshkosh men's cross country team placed ninth at the NCAA Division III Championship held Saturday (Nov. 22) at the L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex in Hanover, Ind.

Boehlke finished as UW-Oshkosh's top runner by completing the 8,000-meter course in a time of 26:07. His performance was just three seconds faster than teammate John LeRoy's (Jr. • Oshkosh) 53rd-place time of 26:10. Josh Moen of Wartburg College (Iowa) claimed the individual title with a time of 24:34, while Macharia Yuot of Widener University (Pa.) finished second in 25:03, Marcus Murphy of Loras College (Iowa) third in 25:10, Adam Booth of Grinnell College (Iowa) fourth in 25:12 and Ted Turner of State University of New York-Geneseo fifth in 25:12. A total of 207 runners finished the race.

Calvin College (Mich.) won the team championship with 48 points, the second-lowest score in NCAA Division III history. The team title was the second for the Knights, who also captured the NCAA Division III crown in 2000. Calvin College also set a meet record by having six of its runners place in the top-35 finishes.

Completing the top-10 teams in scoring were second-place UW-Stevens Point with 128 points, third-place North Central College (Ill.) with 155, fourth-place UW-La Crosse with 163, fifth-place Wartburg College with 210, sixth-place Williams College (Mass.) with 220, seventh-place State University of New York-Geneseo with 259, eighth-place Keene State College (N.H.) with 279, ninth-place and defending champion UW-Oshkosh with 286 and 10th-place Nebraska Wesleyan University with 295. A total of 24 teams took part in an event that had UW-Oshkosh finished in the top 10 for the fourth consecutive year, including a championship in 2002.

UW-Oshkosh, which was competing as a team entry at the NCAA Division III Championship for the 15th time in 16 years and 16th overall, had its scoring rounded out by David Cisewski's (Sr. • Stevens Point) 64th-place time of 26:19, Matt Groose's (Sr. • Watertown) 86th-place time of 26:34 and Jason Fast's (Sr. • Menasha) 145th-place time of 27:14. Cisewski was a fifth-place finisher at the event a year ago.

The Titans' list of participants at the NCAA Division III Championship concluded with Pat Seger's (Sr. • Oshkosh) 151st-place time of 27:18 and Paul Brown's (Jr. • West Allis) 185th-place time of 27:59.

Titans To Defend NCAA Title

UW-Oshkosh will have an opportunity to defend its title at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championship following its first-place finish at the Midwest Regional held Saturday (Nov. 15) at the Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax.

UW-Oshkosh won the 29-team Midwest Regional with 35 points, compiling the fifth-lowest score in the 32-year history of the event. North Central College (Ill.) finished second with 97 points, UW-Stevens Point third with 98, UW-La Crosse fourth with 109 and UW-Whitewater fifth with 135. The top-five teams at the Midwest Regional join qualifiers from seven other regions at next Saturday's (November 22) NCAA Division III Championship in Hanover, Ind.

UW-Oshkosh will be competing at the NCAA Division III Championship for the 15th time in 16 years and 16th time overall. The Titans finished first at the NCAA Division III Championship in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 2002 and third in 1987, 1991 and 2000. Only North Central College (Ill.), with 12 titles, has won more NCAA Division III titles than UW-Oshkosh.

The Titans nabbed the Midwest Regional title by placing six runners in the top-18 finishes. David Cisewski (Sr. • Stevens Point) led the way for UW-Oshkosh by completing the 8,000-meter course in a second-place time of 24:44, while Nick Boehlke (Jr. • Eagle River) finished third in 24:45. UW-Oshkosh's scoring was completed by Matt Groose's (Sr. • Watertown) fifth-place time of 24:52, John LeRoy's (Jr. • Oshkosh) eighth-place time of 25:03 and Pat Seger's (Sr. • Oshkosh) 17th-place time of 25:16.

Other competitors at the Midwest Regional for UW-Oshkosh were Paul Brown (Jr. • West Allis) and Jason Fast (Sr. • Menasha). Brown finished 18th with a time of 25:17 and Fast 53rd in 26:12. Ryan Kleimenhagen of UW-Platteville took individual honors with a time of 24:43.

Titans To Compete At NCAA Regional

The UW-Oshkosh men's and women's cross country teams look to extend their seasons by one more week when they compete at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional on Saturday (Nov. 15) at the Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax.

UW-Eau Claire is serving as the host institution for an event that features 42 women's and 40 men's cross country teams. The top five men's and the top four women's squads from the meet will advance to the NCAA Division III Championship on November 22 in Hanover, Ind.

The women's division of the Midwest Regional includes three of the top 10 and five of the top 25 teams in the NCAA Division III according to the United States Cross Country Coaches Association. Teams expected to compete for the four available slots in the national meet are 22nd-ranked University of Chicago (Ill.), UW-Eau Claire, ninth-ranked UW-La Crosse, sixth-ranked UW-Oshkosh, third-ranked UW-Stevens Point and 18th-ranked and defending regional champion Washington University (Mo.).

Four of the top 10 and six of the top 25 men's teams in the NCAA Division III according to the United States Cross Country Coaches Association will be among the entries in the men's division. Teams expected to contend for the five available positions in the national championship are Augustana College (Ill.), third-ranked North Central College (Ill.), 24th-ranked University of Chicago, sixth-ranked UW-La Crosse, top-ranked and defending regional and national champion UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, fourth-ranked UW-Stevens Point, UW-Whitewater and 19th-ranked Washington University.

Titans Repeat As WIAC Champion

David Cisewski (Sr. • Stevens Point) led a strong UW-Oshkosh effort as the Titans successfully defended their title at the WIAC Men's Cross Country Championship held Saturday (Nov. 1) at the Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax. The league title was the third in the last four years for UW-Oshkosh and ninth overall.

UW-Oshkosh captured this year's conference championship with 29 points, the lowest-winning score since UW-La Crosse totaled 27 in 1994. UW-Stevens Point finished second with 48 points, while UW-La Crosse placed third 82 points, UW-Whitewater fourth with 107, UW-Platteville fifth with 128, UW-Stout sixth with 169, UW-Eau Claire seventh with 187, UW-River Falls eighth with 246 and UW-Superior ninth with 284.

UW-Oshkosh's Cisewski finished second in the individual competition by completing the 8,000-meter course in a time of 24:45. The Titans had all five of their scorers place in the top 12 as John LeRoy (Jr. • Oshkosh) finished fourth in a time of 24:55, Nick Boehlke (Jr. • Eagle River) fifth in 25:02, Matt Groose (Sr. • Watertown) sixth in 25:06 and Paul Brown (Jr. • West Allis) 12th in 25:23. Ryan Kleimenhagen of UW-Platteville ran to a first-place time of 24:42 to repeat as league champion.

Rounding out UW-Oshkosh's finishers were Pat Seger's (Sr. • Oshkosh) 17th-place time of 25:30, Jason Fast's (Sr. • Menasha) 26th-place time of 25:58, Matt Berndt's (Jr. • Grafton) 31st-place time of 26:06, Adam Nelson's (Fr. • New Berlin) 35th-place time of 26:16, Matt Hansen's (So. • West Allis) 37th-place time of 26:19, Brian Kelley's (Fr. • Winnebago, Ill.) 42nd-place time of 26:25 and Sean Meehan's (Jr. • Franklin) 58th-place time of 26:53. A total of 100 runners finished the race.

UW-Oshkosh's John Zupanc was voted WIAC Coach of the Year by league coaches, while UW-Stevens Point's Curt Johnson received the WIAC's Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award. 

Titans Run Past Pointers In Non-Scoring Meet

With both teams resting the majority of their top runners in preparation for the WIAC Men's Cross Country Championship on November 1 in Colfax, UW-Oshkosh concluded its regular season with a dominating performance against UW-Stevens Point on Friday (Oct. 24) in Plover.

UW-Oshkosh took five of the top-six individual finishes in the non-scoring meet as Jesse Sanchez (So. • Lake Geneva) led the way with a time of 25:44. Brandon Lesky (So. • Cudahy) of UW-Oshkosh finished second in the 8,000-meter race with a time of 26:09, while Chris Pfaffenroth of UW-Stevens Point finished third in 26:58, Nate Boehlke (Fr. • Eagle River) of UW-Oshkosh fourth in 27:06 and Mark Johnson (Fr. • Hartland) of UW-Oshkosh fifth in 27:19.

Other finishers for the Titans in the field of 20 runners were sixth-place Ryan Richardson (Fr. • Winnebago, Ill.) in 27:25, ninth-place Shelby Anderson (Jr. • Verona) in 27:44, 10th-place Jon Simon (Fr. • Milwaukee) in 27:49, 12th-place Jeff Polley (Fr. • Stillwater, Minn.) in 28:10, 15th-place Harrison Fegley (Fr. • Menomonee Falls) in 28:33, 17th-place Chris Anderson (Sr. • Platteville) in 28:56 and 20th-place Josh Bigelow (Jr. • Watertown) in 29:53.

Defending league champion UW-Oshkosh is expected to receive stiff competition for the team title at the upcoming WIAC Championship from UW-Stevens Point and UW-La Crosse. The Titans have won the WIAC title twice in the past three years and eight times overall.

UW-Oshkosh To Host Cross Country Invitational

The top four men's and three of the top six women's cross country teams in the NCAA Division III run at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne on Saturday (Oct. 18) as UW-Oshkosh hosts the Hammer Strength Invitational.

The women's race, which starts at 10:45 a.m., features third-ranked UW-Stevens Point, fifth-ranked UW-Oshkosh and sixth-ranked Calvin College (Mich.). The men's race, which starts at 11:20 a.m., features defending national champion and top-ranked UW-Oshkosh, second-ranked North Central College (Ill.), third-ranked UW-Stevens Point and fourth-ranked Calvin College.

Also competing in the meet are the men's and women's teams from both Augustana College (Ill.) and Hope College (Mich.) and the men's squad from Elmhurst College (Ill.).
